The Left Party believes in continuing to upgrade and develop Australia's infrastructure and transport to allow for better connectivity in the future.
IMPROVING MELBOURNE'S INFRASTRUCTURE
Over the last three years, the debate about Melbourne’s East-West Link has been all over the news. Since the last state election in 2014, the Victorian government has been trying to roll back the plans due to economic advice given by Infrastructure Australia (Source: ABC News). Unfortunately reversing the scheme has become quite a costly 1.1 billion dollar process, something that has been aptly placed in the spotlight by the liberal coalition. Currently in Victoria, other projects have been prioritised like the metro tunnel and the removal of level crossings across the state. The government have made clear that the East-West Link is scrapped for good.
The Left Party supports the Victorian government’s decision to prioritise the safety of the Victorian people regarding the state’s train service. We feel that if, in the future, people feel safer on public transport they may be more willing to utilize it and the East-West link won’t ultimately be necessary. The Left Party believes that the newly proposed North-East Link (particularly corridor C) is a more beneficial road but that the option of the eventual completion of the east-west link should not be disregarded forever.
