The LEFT government is committed to the preservation of this beautiful sun burnt country’s natural landscape.
TASMANIA FOREST PROTECTION
Tasmania may be small but it has a big heart; its natural forests. Tasmania’s natural forests are unfortunately being logged for other uses. In recent times, legislation has dictated that a new force is to come into play to be on the frontline, protecting Tasmania’s forests. Covering most of Tasmania’s surface, its forests are being declared national parks and government environmental agencies the Left Party would implement are avidly the caretakers of these forests and the animals that inhabit it.
We propose that funding should be increased to accommodate the increased needs of the beautiful forests. These forests are unique and can only exist through protection. Before it is too late, Left has plans to do something about saving these precious landmarks.

CATCHMENT PROTECTION - THOMSON DAM
The majestic Thomson Dam is twice as big as Sydney Harbour, has a capacity of 1068 billion litres of water, and is responsible for 60% of Melbourne’s total water storage. Without it, Melbourne would not have sufficient water to sustain the population. This is why it is of high importance, that the catchments are protected, because this will help to protect its waterways and water quality that provide Melbourne with the resources that it needs. As well as its service to Melbourne, it sustain various agricultural properties along with hydroelectric generation.
This catchment is vital to Melbourne's water supply and will, with the Left Party’s policies, continue to supply for generations to come. This will not happen if the water becomes contaminated. Threats from bush fires, high winds and various other natural phenomena place Thomson Dam in a need of protection. Left plans to fulfil its policies on this in order to make sure that it will continue to supply Melbourne with water, electricity and resources for other needs.

CORAL BLEACHING ACTION - GREAT BARRIER REEF
Stretching 2300 kilometres along Queensland’s sunny coast, the Great Barrier Reef is an Australian icon. Rising sea temperatures are a reason for the coral in the Great Barrier Reef becoming bleached white. Although this ecosystem is being protected, we need to save it; and save it we will. The vast biological diversity contained within the reef is where Left will be focusing its protection aids. We propose to have higher restriction on agricultural pesticides used in northern coastal Queensland. These highly chemical contaminated products can have catastrophic effects on the biological life in the reef. This should ensure that the sea life death toll will decrease. The reef will last longer and we will continue to work on developments for technology to save this icon.
REGULATIONS ON COAL PORTS IN NORTH-EAST QUEENSLAND
Coal ports in northern Queensland contribute to vast amounts of water pollution, throughout Queensland’s coast, this also includes the Great Barrier Reef. Coal at these ports is situated as close as possible to the water, in order to make it easier for docking ships to load and unload. This sometimes results of coal falling into the water and polluting it, significantly affecting biological life. It is not acceptable for this to be happening. As a result, we plan to tighten restrictions on coal placement and movement, to ensure that this destructive action ceases to happen again. This will be done by limiting coal mining near water ways/systems; for coal that still seeks to be transported via ship, it will first be transported by rail/road to the Gulf of Carpentaria. This means that there will be little to no damage caused to the Great Barrier Reef and the beautiful marine life possessed by our nation.
